Sanctuary Program (Huntington Youth Bureau)

PRÉCIS Sanctuary is a program for runaway youth in the Town of Huntington,

Long Island, operated by the Huntington Youth Bureau. The program provides counseling and crisis intervention services including a 24-hour hotline and temporary shelter for runaways in the homes of volunteer families. Sanctuary began formally in 1976 with the receipt of an H.E.W. grant to the youth bureau. The grant culminated an evolution begun in the early 1970s by youth workers in the youth bureau's satellite Youth Development Associations, who provided services to runaways on an informal basis.
