ABSTRACT
The central question that the present chapter is concerned with is what role does natural language play, independent of other cultural phenomena, in human understanding and learning. I consider this by first reviewing the Whorfian hypothesis and early investigations of it. Recent research which tests this hypothesis is then presented, and finally, the issue of how content or familiarity with a particular domain of knowledge may affect reasoning is discussed.
