IEMITSU'S SUCCESSOR was the son of one of his concubines, the daughter of an old clothes seller. He was only about nine years of age and his health was bad, which explains why there were serious attempts at revolt against the bakufu. But the system was firm. Of course, it was not the Shogun who ruled but the bureaucracy, so none of the attempts succeeded.
