The 20th Century: Troubled Beginnings
THE PERIOD 1890-1915 was very eventful. The political parties were locked in fierce rivalry. In 1894 war was declared on China: the first war undertaken by modem Japan. It lasted seven-and-ahalf months and was an unbroken series of victories on land and at sea. Patriotic enthusiasm reigned throughout the country and in Tokyo especially the news which the papers brought excited the whole population. Political differences temporarily disappeared and agreement was quickly reached between all the parties.
