John Horne Burns, the Gallery

Based on the one and a half years that John Horne Burns (19161953) spent with the military in Italy, The Gallery (Harper & Brothers, 1947) was named “Best War Book of the Year” by the Saturday Review of Literature. It is more a series of short stories than a novel in the established sense, providing portraits of various Americans and Italians who come together in the summer of 1944 in a Naples arcade called the Galleria Umberto Primo.
