Michael De Forrest, the Gay Year
The “gay year” chronicled here is that of Joe Harris, a twentythree-year-old living in a small New York apartment, who has his first sexual encounter of any kind with Roger Stuart, a narcissistic young man living with gay actor Teddy Watson. Prior to his night with Roger, Joe was adamant that he was not gay, and he still denies he is even after a series of sexual encounters with Roger. Among Joe’s acquaintances are painter Lou Franklin, who marries African-American Nella Webb and has a child by her. Living in the apartment immediately above Lou Franklin are Wally Steinman, Charles Evans, and Harold Price. Wally and Charles are very gay, and Harold is-well, confused.
