Thomas Hal Phillips, the Bitterweed Path
The setting is Mississippi. The date is somewhat obscure, probably around the turn of the twentieth century, when the Civil War is still a strong memory, and those who fought it are still alive. Two boys, Darrell Barclay and Roger Pitt, meet for the first time-nakedwhile changing into tracksuits to compete in the Vicksburg Spring Race. Pitt’s father is wealthy and determined to get richer, while Darrell is poor, a sharecropper’s son, soon to move with his father and grandmother onto Pitt land.
