ABSTRACT

Every year billions of dollars are spent to provide government-funded social and health services such as cancer screening, tobacco prevention, foster care, drug and alcohol treatment, and others. There is no reason to believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are less likely to need these services than non-LGBT people are. Unfortunately, researchers have generated a great deal of evidence showing that despite the need, these programs are not successfully serving the LGBT community (Gay and Lesbian Medical Association [GlMA], 2000).
