It is curious and surprising that printed musical ephemera has not been discussed in gatherings like this before. There have been neither papers nor panel discussions, and very little has appeared in print, save James Fuld's modest but provocative article from 1981 about two types of musical ephemera, posters and programs. 1 How has it escaped inquiry? It cannot be ignored; it is vast, diverse, and difficult to handle, yet we have had to deal with it, in some fashion, since the invention of printing.2
