ABSTRACT

While David prepared drinks, the interviewer observed that he was the type of older man whose attire was always appropriate and yet self-consciously “mod”: solid polyester slacks, white patent leather shoes, and matching belt. Everything about him was deliberate. The two men sat face to face, and yet the interviewer felt that David was peering down at him. It wasn’t so much that David sometimes contradicted the interviewer’s comments as a teacher might correct an errant pupil; rather, a barely perceptible noblesse oblige defined his style. Still, David was a man who, although peering from behind carefully built defenses, was ready to open his heart.
