the Northwest Passage from Godhavn, Greenland, through the islands of Canada to Fort Egbert, Alaska. In 1911, he was the first explorer to reach the South Pole. His studies of magnetics led to major revisions of theories concerning the magnetic North Pole and greater understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
