ABSTRACT

Winner of the 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature, Nadine Gordimer was born of Jewish parents in Springs, a gold-mining town east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Both of her parents were immigrants. In his teens, her father had fled the czarist anti-Semitism of Lithuania, and in Springs he learned watchmaking and became a jeweler. Her mother was born in England.
