ABSTRACT

Catholic theologians, beginning with Jacob Latomus in 1522, showed that they had no problem arguing the traditional Catholic doctrine solely on the basis of the Bible. Catholic hesitancy remained, however, with respect both to accepting a text other than that of the Vulgate as authentic and to endorsing vernacular translations of the Bible. For Catholics the quickly emerging diversity of Protestant groupings was proof positive of the need for the explicating role of the church. Early on Bullinger effectively saw to the reaffirmation of the introduction of the Reformation by the Zurich city council against Catholic moves that sought to make Zwingli's unexpected demise the occasion for returning the city to the Catholic fold. Catholic monastic order founded in 1530 by Antonio Maria Zaccaria together with two laymen, Giacomo Antonio Morigia and Bartolomeo Ferrari. The order received papal approval in 1533.
