3. Germany, Austria and Switzerland The fact that so little is known about the history of women artists has to do with the way in which women have been perceived and evaluated. With a few exceptions, art made by women in the Germanspeaking countries was not purchased in any quantity, collected systematically or carefully preserved; it was not accurately labelled in collections or made the subject of scholarly research. It has thus been difficult to identify the body of art created by women, so that our knowledge of their legacy is incomplete.
