William Adarns' Early Life

A s Adams recorded in a letter written some years after his arrival in Japan, he was born in Gillingham, a town in Kent not fir from the castle town of Rochester and the port of Chatham.

The parish register of the Anglican Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalen, Gillingham, covering the years 1558, the year of Elizabeth Tudor's accession to the throne, to 1650, the year following the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, records: WILL. ADAMS SONNE OF JOHN ADAMS BAPTISED THE 4 AND 20TH OF SEPTEMBER 1564.
