Kanazawa, currently the capital of the Ishikawa prefecture, once was a wealthy castle town run by the Maeda, one of Japan's most powerful clans during the Tokugawa period. Although most of the family's original castle has been de stroyed by fire, a garden of the early lords has been well preserved: Kenrokuen Park, designated a national "famous spot" in 1922. The Edo-period garden is one of the most magnificent parks in Japan. It and other historic sites in Kanazawa give the city the atmosphere of "old Japan."
