The oasis city of Kashgar lies to the east of the Pamirs at an intersection of the ancient Silk Road. Here the trade routes that skirted the northern and southern fringes of the Takla Makan Desert converged, and from Kashgar travelers crossed the Pamirs to Fergana before heading west through Sogdiana or Bactria to Merv (now Mary).
