ABSTRACT

Location: The capital of Sarawak, Kuching is situated on the Sarawak River on the island of Borneo.

Description: A settlement since the 1820s, Kuching was further developed under the auspices of James Brooke, the rāja of Sarawak. During the nineteenth century, the town became an important trading capital. Today it is the largest town in east Malaysia and the eighth-largest urban center in Malaysia. Kuching remains a pleasant city to visit; it retains some interesting architecture despite heavy bombing by the Japanese during World War II.
