In 1978 the ruins of the ancient Tai capital city called Sukhothai were designated a Historical Park. Until the de cree, the deserted, overgrown city had been inhabited only by a handful of farmers and Buddhist monks. Today, the ruins of Sukhothai are one of Thailand's most popular national attrac tions, and the streets of the onetime seat of government are crowded with vendors catering to its visitors.
