ABSTRACT

Location: In the Banda Sea, itself an eastward extension of the Java and Flores Seas; 150 miles southeast of Ambon and 600 miles north of Darwin, Australia.

Description: Clustered around a modest but active volcano, the Banda Archipelago's six diminutive islands rise steeply in humps of tousled forest ringed by coral reefs. For many years the world's only source of nutmeg and mace, their approximately forty square miles were once the most sought after in the Spice Islands.
