Location: In Shiga prefecture in the central region of Honshū (the main island of Japan), 258 miles west of Tōkyō and 40 miles northeast of Kyōto, on the northeastern shore of Lake Biwa.

Description: Hikone is best known as a castle town associated with the Ii family, who were prominent during the Edo period (1603-1868) as officials of the shōgunate and as patrons of the arts.
