Headcase, Headstrong, and Head-of-the-Class: Resocialization and Labelling in Dominican Baseball

The following article falls within the framework of Yiannakis’ (1989) call for applied sport sociology. The work on which it is based, following Street and Weinstein’s (1975) typology, was part “social engineering” and part “radical sociology” in that it sought to deliver a critique of existing views and specific solutions to particular problems. Major league baseball academies in the Dominican Republic training young players for their eventual move to North America are the applied focus to this study.
