ABSTRACT

For his work, the composer has not only to find the right note and a strong form, but also to find a good acoustic, a sympathetic reverberation. Without that, his work will not come to life. For the product of his efforts is nothing like a scientific formula or a mathematical proof that lies latent in the material. (Although music in particular also knows that mathematical side: the law of tonality, apart from being an aesthetic wonder, is also a mathematical wonder.) But his work, although constructed from existing elements, adds something to that reality, something that was not previously there, just as living beings are added to the world, thanks to a sympathetic breeding-ground, the right biotope. For a composition, this is the acoustic, not only that of the concert hall, but also that of the country: the social acoustic.
