ABSTRACT

This chapter is about a class of Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs known as intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). While there are many computer programs designed to teach musical skills (Hofstetter, 1988; Williams and Webster, 1996), there are significantly fewer that can be called intelligent tutors. The primary difference between an ITS and traditional educational software is the former’s focus on “intelligent” interaction between the student and the computer. Hypermedia systems, for example, provide students with links to traverse, but they do not attempt to suggest paths of interest, and generally, they do not attempt to provide diagnostic feedback.
