ABSTRACT

Schools are classified according to location in each separate Gaeltacht, in rough geographic order from north to south and west to east, to aid location on maps. Irish-language name forms are given first, as they are official in the Gaeltacht. Variant spellings are nevertheless often encountered in official publications, ignoring the modem simplified versions. Anglicized forms are also given here as a rough guide to pronunciation for readers unfamiliar with Irish orthography. They are not standardized but are the forms normally found on topographic maps ofIreland. Maps before about 1970 hardly ever used the Irish versions of Gaeltacht place-names.
