ABSTRACT
Although the ports of China were thrown open in 1684, European trade at Whampoa did not begin until 1699. Amoy, profiting from English voyages there in the 1670s and early 1680s, attracted nine vessels and Macao, one, during this period. However, determined efforts by the court and the accommodating attitude of local officials and merchants soon reversed the trend in Canton's favour.
