ABSTRACT

Urban habitats often appear beset by problems. Pollution, the spread of noxious species, dereliction and the need for reclamation, restoration, habitat protection and species conservation are all important in urban environments. However, there are also many opportunities for wildlife in novel artificial habitats or by the creation of new habitats. In addition, there are benefits in integrating human communities within urban habitats, not least for environmental education. The following sections discuss several of these issues with reference to example habitats and species within urban areas.
