ABSTRACT

Theelection tended to be overshadowed in the press by foreign news, until the closing stages of the campaign. Events of tremendous moment were taking place in Europe and throughout the world. It was thus natural that they should distract attention from a relatively parochial event. The beginning of the campaign coincided in time with the fall of the short-lived Doenitz Government in Germany, and the suicides of prominent Nazi ex-leaders. Before May was out a Syrian crisis of alarming magnitude had developed. In the first days of June the Allied Four-Power Control was established in Berlin. The revelation in the next few days of great war secrets —Radar, Pluto, Fido—still further postponed the capture of the front page by election news. On 25 June, within a fortnight of polling-day, the United Nations Charter was signed at San Francisco.
