Globalisation and Regional Integration

SANDRO SIDERI

Alongside globalisation and its accompanying effects, a shift towards regionalism is also occurring. It is our intention to analyse these two seemingly contrasting phenomena, assess their relevance and their eventual connection. Section I addresses globalisation and its impact, particularly on the nationstate. Section II considers the emergence of regionalism, its causes, and the complications created by the rising demand of devolution. A number of case studies of regional integration - Europe, North America, Asia, Latin America and the rest of the Third World - are analysed in depth. Some reflections and tentative conclusions are presented in section III.
