ABSTRACT

Collaborative teaching here is taken to mean any lesson that has been jointly planned and taught by a mentor (or experienced teacher) and student teacher(s). The degree of collaboration involved in the planning may vary considerably, The mentor may well plan the lesson outline and then suggest a specific slot within it for which they would like the student teacher(s) to take responsibility; or, at the other end of the spectrum, both mentor and student teacher(s) may together plan the whole lesson ‘from scratch’. Whatever the degree of collaboration, the lesson should be planned to ensure that the student teacher(s) have a clearly defined responsibility within it, which is deliberately targeted to help their learning.
