chapter  5

Communitarianism is useful to school leaders because of its concern for the schooling that forms citizens who are disposed and prepared to care for the com.. mon good. Moreover, it acknowledges that care for the common good repre.. sents difficult work in particular communities. Unlike many discussions of schooling, this chapter considers the pertinence to school leadership of the real communities in which schools are embedded, or from which they are too often alienated. It also critically considers "community" as a metaphor that can describe the social relationships of school life.
