ABSTRACT

As of the present writing, ethnomusicology has developed in several directions, some of which are of only marginal interest to anthropologists because of the specialized nature of the researches. Among these developments are the computerization of pitch measurement data, the discussion of tuning patterns in the absence of information concerning form, the development of notational techniques in the Far East, and other subjects of similar interest to musicologists. For the purpose of this paper, information not of central interest to the discipline of anthropology will be deliberately excluded in order to concentrate upon the relationship between music and culture.
