ABSTRACT

The ultimate goal of mathematics educators’ efforts in investigating problem solving is to find ways in which to improve students’ abilities to solve problems. To this end, researchers have sought a better understanding of the nature of problem solving and of the roles that various factors play in problem-solving performance. In an attempt to identify the characteristic qualities and mental processes that lead to successful performance, some researchers have focused on the problem solver. Others have focused on characteristics of the problem tasks.
