ABSTRACT
Some 314 people are known to have been prosecuted under the witchcraft Statutes between 1560 and 1680 at the Essex Assize and Quarter Session courts. Since this figure represents more than two-thirds of those known to have been accused of witchcraft in Essex, it is necessary to say something about the procedure of the two courts.
