They are straightforward and easy to understand, needing little or no explanation. In fact, you can even make up your own words and everyone will know just what you mean! Compound words &elp to make our language work because of their directness and attention to detail - the addition of the word 'tummy' to 'ache' leaves no doubt about what the problem may be; the word 'room' is pretty general but when you add 'bed' to it, you immediately specify a particular place. Our modern world has seen a proliferation of compound words - because of developments in science and technology, and also because of our eagerness to make our vocabulary keep up with our increased pace of life.
