Paired reading / writing An approach to providing reading / writing support and can be undertaken by parents/ carers, pupils, teaching assistants and mentors, as well as teachers. The teacher and the pupil read a book together. The pupil chooses the book. Both read the first page or pages together at the pupil’s pace. If the pupil makes a mistake the teacher points at the word and repeats it correctly. Pupils are praised when they attempt to read and when they actually read sentences and paragraphs independently. If the pupil comes across an unfamiliar word the teacher waits a few seconds, and if the pupil is incorrect the teacher supplies the word and the pupil then repeats it. This approach is interactive, with discussion and questioning occurring during and after reading. This approach leads to improvements in pupils’ reading ages.
