Rating scales Assessment scales used to record observations and measurement of a pupil’s progress. They can be used as the basis for judgements about pupils with learning difficulties.
Readability level Readability of a given text refers to the level of reading skill that is required in order to read the text. Readability affects reading fluency. A text should be at the readability level of the pupil. If a given text has too many unfamiliar or difficult words then fluency will be adversely affected. An independent reading level requires that at least 97 per cent of the words should be identifiable. If less than 90 per cent of words are identifiable then a frustration level is reached. It is a good idea for teachers to read to pupils when pupils have reached their frustration level. This will help pupils improve their knowledge of comprehension and sentence structure and expand their vocabulary.
