Early intervention Early intervention is essential in ameliorating learning difficulties. The effective elements of early intervention include clear and direct instruction, intensive practice along with peer and adult support, positive feedback, treatment of any emotional and behavioural problems, differentiation of tasks, phonological awareness training, phonic decoding skills and liaison with parents/carers and external agencies. Other aspects include teaching based on a structured approach that sets targets, incorporates intensive practice along with formative assessment, and enables children to acquire independence and responsibility for their own learning.
