ABSTRACT
Writing – other than writing from dictation, or the pure copying of someone else’s text – is a kind of problem-solving. It is a process of decision-making at all levels: about which ideas or facts to include; how to organise them; what punctuation and vocabulary to use; and more. The teaching approaches outlined below help to heighten children’s awareness that writing is synonymous with problem-solving. They can be applied to most writing tasks.
