ABSTRACT

To overcome many traditional prejudices about working away from the office, Mirchandani suggests we need to reconceptualise organisations in terms of a set of relationships. In many respects, she notes, organisational culture is seen by its members as spatially bound. Given the importance of work identities and relationships to individuals and work processes, it is these aspects that must be addressed for virtual working to succeed. The importance of building relationships – often remotely – is seen as important by many teleworkers in getting their job done, exchanging ideas and transferring expertise. Indeed, more than just the communications infrastructure, it is the cultural and relationship infrastructure that supports work collaborations and knowledge exchange.
