ABSTRACT

Excellent materials have been produced by the Primary Strategy based on the maths framework and the P scales. Especially useful is the document Towards the National Curriculum for Mathematics in Key Stages 1 and 2 (DfES 2002) which gives examples of what pupils with SEN should be able to do at each P level. This document is designed to be used alongside the primary framework. The materials make tracking back relatively quick and simple and can be obtained from primary maths consultants or on the DfES website at www.standards. dfes.gov.uk/numeracy/communities/inclusion. Offering pupils a wide range of active and relevant maths experiences is important for maintaining motivation and attention. Applying mathematical concepts in real-life contexts helps pupils to generalise skills and consolidates their understanding.
