ABSTRACT

Balanced: Children in the foundation stage with SEN and disabilities often need to learn how to interact with adults and with other children. Build in time for the child to play alone, with an adult, with one other child, and as part of a group. Even if the child has one-to-one support, this balance of interaction remains of vital importance. Flexible: Don't flog a dead horse! Sometimes children with learning difficulties cannot settle to a particular task or type of activity. The child may need to spend extra time outdoors, or just curled up on a bean bag with a book. This isn't to say that a child should 'get away with' not participating just because of his or her learning difficulty, more that the adults working with him/her need to be sensitive to the child's particular needs.
