ABSTRACT

Warming up at the beginning of a lesson may also help to avoid the kinds of accidental injuries that children do commonly suffer – bumps, bruises and cuts from falls and collisions. Warming up doesn’t just prepare the body physically; it helps people to get into the right frame of mind to concentrate properly on the task. Warm-up activities should be designed to raise the children’s heart rates gradually. Cooling down has important physical functions. A cool-down period not only allows children to unwind and become calm again but assists the effective transition back to classroom learning after the physically active session. The cool-down period should last from five to ten minutes which, followed by changing, should enable children to go on to the next activity, whether in the classroom or not, refreshed, relaxed and composed. All cool-down activities should be performed in a quiet, relaxed and calm way.
