ABSTRACT
Children today are in a strange situation. Witnessing death in their own families and communities has largely been banished and adults speak about the end of life in euphemisms and metaphors. Stories have ‘tidy’, happy endings. At the same time the media provides young people with a multitude of images of death and destruction which portray other people's experiences.
