This chapter considers the issues related to leading and managing staff. A key task for subject leaders is to work with staff as individuals and to develop them into an effective team. This necessarily involves the subject leader in building a team from developing and motivating others. In addition, the subject leader is responsible for assessing staff performance and for contributing to the process of staff appraisal. As noted in the previous chapter the subject leader will be dealing with staff with a wide range of skills, abilities and experience. Consequently, it is of paramount importance that the subject leader can motivate and encourage others to work together both efficiently and effectively.
