ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, reference has been made to the importance of enabling children to engage in language activities where oracy, reading and writing are integrated. Much of what has been said in the discrete chapters on oracy and reading applies also to writing. By the time children start playgroup, nursery or school they have already accumulated a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the ways that language works. They will be familiar with print within the social environment, and most will have had considerable experience of stories and books. In addition they will have experimented with writing and probably regard themselves as writers within their own world of play.
