ABSTRACT
If all children were predictable in their progress, following the same stages at exactly the same times and responding in identical ways to the same experiences, there would be no need for assessment. Teachers could simply refer to a table of figures and read off the correct level for the child's age. How simple that would be - a production line of identical products!
