ABSTRACT

Making interaction more enjoyable for everyone concerned and teaching people that they are valued and respected as individuals are two very important reasons for creating a responsive environment; but at the same time, we want to help people with PMLD to become more competent communicators and to develop both socially and cognitively. Since the first edition of this book was published, it has become more usual for people with PMLD to spend some of their time in community settings or with their less disabled peers. This chapter is concerned with:

how a responsive environment can be created in inclusive settings;

how you can use the responsive environment to promote social, communicative and cognitive progress.
