ABSTRACT

McGehee describes the creation of Clytemnestra and her role in designing the costumes, first for her own character and then the other women. Martha Graham's Clytemnestra was the culminating achievement of her illustrious career. An enormous success, with every performance sold out, there was an opportunity, unprecedented for modern dance, to have an indefinite run on Broadway. Regrettably, management turned it down. Another lost opportunity was the building of a permanent studio-theater within the Martha Graham Studio, as designed by lighting designer Jean Rosenthal. In the end, it was Martha Graham who, like Siva, had the power to create or to destroy.
