ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will first attempt to summarise the most important findings from our research and applied experiences in the game. These are not in order of importance, although there is little doubt that some will make a greater impact than others to the success of an Academy. In structuring the conclusion, we have been guided initially by the chapter headings and section titles. Beyond the detail, however, it seems to us that there are some key underlying messages that are clearly discernible when one looks at the data. One of these is that the staff are the most important resource in creating highly effective centres for the development of young footballers. This is not a new or surprising finding; it has been said many times before and is rarely disputed. It has long been acknowledged that high-quality coaching is absolutely necessary to produce elite performance. Clubs must appoint coaches with the best skills, most advanced knowledge and highest levels of motivation to want to develop. We often hear clubs talk about people being their greatest asset but then become very hesitant to support them with continual professional development. This may be borne out of the fear of losing good people, but what happens if you don’t invest in them and they become systematic soldiers and stay!
